The dual policy of the Assam state Government was evident yesterday evening at around 7:30 PM when police opened fire on anti-dam protestors at Thekeraguri under Boginadi Police Station of Lakhimpur district. At least 10 anti-mega dam agitators sustained injuries in this incident. It came just a day

As per reports received, it all started when police forcefully arrested more than 100 supporters of the KMSS. This took place near the Ghaghor Chariali area at NH 52 where the NHPC trucks carrying Diesel and construction materials to Lower Subansiri Dam Site were allowed to pass through forcefully by police. Hundreds of locals had taken to the streets to protest against this movement and the police resorted to firing to control the situation.

General Secretary of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Akhil Gogoi later alleged to media personnel that NHPC is using the police against the agitators and trying to move the construction materials with the help of the police.

On the other hand The Group of Ministers (GoM) of the Assam Government is going to sit today for talks with the expert committee constituted earlier by the State Government and the civil society organizations (CSOs) to discuss the impact of Lower Subansiri Dam. Earlier on January 5, the crucial rounds of talks between the organisations protesting the construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Project at Gerukamukh and Group of Ministers (GoM) from Assam Government had failed to yield any outcome.

Same day earlier in Guwahati, the NHPC declared to the media that the previous report by the Expert Committee on negative impact of the dam. In other words, they have declined to even consider the view of the expert committee and the public that the mega dam in its current plan of shape is dangerous and unadvisable.

It is to be mentioned that anti-dam protests in north Assam has recently taken a violent shape with regular clashes taking place at various places between the Police forces and anti-dam protestors. The Assam Chief Minister has claimed the protests to be fuelled by the ULFA and Maoists.
