Hunting of wild animals, especially deer, sambar, for meat continues in Kokrajhar district, despite ban and penalty. In a fresh incident, poachers shot dead an adult sambar at Ripu-Chirang Elephant reserve in Kokrajhar district yesterday. Two poachers were arrested along with a country made gun in regards of this case. According to forest official in Kokrajhar getting specific information, a team from the forest department under Jharbari range carried out a raid at 12 No Kashiguri and caught red-handed two poachers with the meat weighing around 2 quintals. The arrest of the duo later lead to the recovery of the country made gun. The poachers have confessed of killing the animal and selling it in market.
