17 people killed after under-construction railway bridge collapses in Mizoram, more trapped
At least 17 workers were killed and several others trapped after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near Sairang area of Mizoram, earlier today.
According to authorities, rescue operations are in progress as further workers are stressed to be trapped under the debris.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga condoled the deaths through statements on X, formerly Twitter.
“Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy. I extend my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large number to help with rescue operations,” Zoramthanga stated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anguish over the incident and announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh each for those who died in the accident, and ₹ 50,000 each for the injured.

Sabyasachi Dey, Chief Public Relation Officer(PRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway, said that a platoon of railway officers has been rushed to the spot and elderly officials of zone will also visit the site.
