Meeting to resolve UPDS standoff on peace accord
By- Correspondent| Date– October 24, 2011
A tripartite meeting is scheduled today with the Karbi militant group United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) involving the centre and the state Government. Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram has already invited Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi for the meeting today.
The meeting is stated to bring a solution to the last minute standoff by the militant group before signing of the peace accord, expected to take place very soon. The meeting would also review the proposed peace accord.
Mentionable that the UPDS recently demanded for setting up of a neutral administration of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) in the interim period between the signing of the peace accord and the holding of the next election, which is expected by mid of December. In fact the militant outfit, currently in talks with the center, had stated that they would not sign the accord unless the centre agreed to set up the neutral administration till the next election.
However, the local cell of Congress, who is in power of the KAAC currently, has rejected the idea of the neutral or interim government and has termed it as undemocratic.
