Senior ULFA[I] leaders executed by the militant outfit

In a recent report, it is known that the United Liberation Front of Assam[Independent] has taken the extreme measure of awarding capital punishment to two of its senior members. This decision was purportedly made on the grounds of their alleged involvement in conditioning deemed mischievous to the outfit’s objects.

The event unfolded on September 20, when Lachit Hazarika, a high-ranking member of ULFA[I] known by the alias Brigadier Salim alias A Z Shironam Asom, received the death penalty at the Hachi camp positioned in Myanmar’s Sagain area. Contemporaneously, Barnali Asom, an individual with a background in boxing from Tinsukia and a member of the banned outfit, has also been served the ultimate judgment by the militant group. This information was revealed by  two ULFA[I] cadres Nilotpal Asom alias Monjit Gogoi and Upen Asom alias Rohini Gogoi who surrendered before Khonsa Battalion of Assam Rifles on 1 October 2023 in Arunachal Pradesh.

Salim held a close association with ULFA[I] chief Paresh Baruah and had been part of the organization since the late 1980s. Hailed from North Lakhimpur district, Salim’s long-standing term within the militant group underscores the complexity of internal dynamics and connections within ULFA[I]. He was trained in Kachin in his initial days and was trained in Pakistan-Afghanistan border in 2003.

On the other hand, Barnali alias Nayanmoni Chetia, a boxer from Tinsukia, joined the outfit more recently in 2021. The circumstances surrounding his involvement and posterior capital punishment shed light on the evolving composition of the banned organization.

Though the ULFA[I] claimed that both had connections with security forces and involved in anti-outfit activities, the allegations are rejected by the families and police also.

Assam Police’s Director General G P Singh (IPS) condemned this barbaric incident in his tweet on X (formerly Twitter).
