Big Breaking : Rahul Gandhi disqualified from Lok Sabha

Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a defamation case in 2019. Yesterday, Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years of imprisonment by a court in Gujarat’s Surat based on a complaint by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi for his alleged remark, “How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?” The court, however, granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal to a higher court. If the verdict is not cancelled by any higher court, Mr Gandhi will not be allowed to contest elections for the next eight years.

Rahul Gandhi was the MP of Wayanad constituency of Kerala.

The Lok Sabha Secretariat also declared Wayanad constituency as vacant. The Election Commission may announce a special election for the seat.

The Indian National Congress (INC) called the incident a “murder warrant”.

After the disqualification, Rahul Gandhi tweeted that he is fighting for the voice of India and that he is prepared to pay for it.

Criticizing the decision by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, several public figures slammed the BJP government.

Senior lawyer in the Supreme Court of India, Prashant Bhushan wondered “Despite the ridiculous conviction for defamation for 2 yrs by the Surat court, the sentence was stayed for 30 days for Rahul to appeal. But within a day, the Lok Sabha sect has disqualified him!”

INC MP from Assam Mr. Gaurav Gogoi said “Today’s decission is the final nail in the Indian democracy hammered by the BJP, RRS under Prime Minister Modi, Rahul Gandhi has been targeted ever since he has made his speech against Prime minister modi exposing his links with Mr Gautam Adani, this is nothing but the outcome of that if the BJP think that this will make Rahul Gandhi weaker they are wrong.”

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said, “Thieves & looters are still free & Rahul Gandhi was punished. This is a direct murder of democracy. All govt systems are under pressure. This is the beginning of the end of dictatorship.”

All India Trinamool Congress(AITMC) MP Derek O’Brien said, “Mr. Modi and Shah BJP, shame on you. Shame on you.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “Today, we have witnessed a new low for our constitutional democracy.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said, “The government has to withdraw the action taken against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.”

Political analyst Ashok Swain said, “Modi fears Rahul Gandhi the most but wants him to be his main opponent – The biggest joke in Indian political discourse!”

Dr. Swain, further, moved bold and tweeted “Modi has made India a Pakistan.”

Boxer Vijender Singh tweeted, “Stay strong #RahulGandhi.”

Despite the chaos, the Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 says that the moment a member of parliament is convicted of any offence and sentenced for at least two years, she or he attracts disqualification.
