Akhil Gogoi and Anna Hazare, will you dare to fast with Irom Sharmila

It was the 6th of November 2000, the third day of fast-to-death by a young woman with unmatched inner strength, whom now we call as the Iron Lady of Manipur, Irom Sharmila. She was fasting against the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) which had provided the Indian Army all the power in the world to kill and rape civilians of North East India. The reason why she started the fast on 4th of November was to protest against the Indian Army brutally killing ten innocent civilians at a bus stop in Malom, a town in Imphal valley, on November 1st, 2000. The killings by the Indian Army had included a 62-year-old woman and a youth, a former national Child Bravery Award winner. Instead of paying any respect to Sharmila’s democratic and peaceful protest against a barbaric act, instead of even trying to listen to what she wanted to speak about, the state forces of the great (!) Indian democracy arrested her charging her of a suicide attempt.

Irom Sharmila’s peaceful non-violent means of protest, the hunger strike idolized by the Gandhis and the Nehrus whom India still claims to follow, was labeled as an attempt to suicide on her third day of protest. With her courage and patience, Irom Sharmila continued to hunger strike and but was arrested several times throughout the decade, each time with the same charge of the suicide attempt. In fact, seeing Irom Sharmila’s case, we people of North East India now have the right to question if India gained its independence because of suicide attempts by Gandhi and his followers by not eating or drinking.

A few days back, a 73 years old Anna Hazare decided to stage a hunger strike to implement a bill that might help bring down corruption. On his third day, he was contacted by the Prime Minister’s office, accolades flowed into him from all section of media and public and the Government agreed to his demands. This time the State forces did not consider him to be staging a suicide attempt. Instead, he was showered with praises by the Government as well as opposition. Though there is no denying the fact the Anna Hazare deserves credit for his strong stand against corruption, the way he succeeded in just three days has understandably astonished the people of North East India because of the paradigm shift of policy of Indian Government in handling the two hunger strikes.

The pain that Iron Sharmila has gone through in the last decade, without food and water, with a food pipe forced into her nose by the Government of India only to keep her alive, is unbelievable. She is undergoing this pain with so much courage and patience only for the people of North East India and if India indeed believes that the people of this region are its own citizens, India must accept that she is fighting for none else but for the people of India against a draconian rule which violates all norms of human rights. Time and again the people of this region have felt and complained that they live under the colonial rule of the Indian state machine and the fact that India continues to pay no importance to her only shows how true the anguish of the people of North East India is.

As pointed out by eminent writer Sanjoy Hazarika, who recently called for Anna Hazare to fast for Irom Sharmila, Irom Sharmila has challenged the system of Indian State Machine while Anna Hazare has only stood against people who work in that system. This is one of the reasons why her justice is long overdue now. The other reason, of course, is that India does not want to bow down to someone who has challenged the Indian Armed forces, especially if that someone is from a region where Indian Army has created most trouble as well as faced most trouble in the decade-long armed rebellions since the first decade of India’s Independence.

However, the reason why the above is written is not to just compare Irom Sharmila from Anna or to blame the Indian Government again and again, while we sit and enjoy at our homes. The reason is to question a recent controversy in Guwahati whether the authorities should permit the public rally against corruption, in which Anna Hazare is set to take part in the Judges field. Guwahati Town Club, led by veteran ex-ULFA Munin Nabish is strictly against letting the newly laid out sports field to be used for a public gathering as it will destroy not only the sports field but also require huge efforts to bring back the field to a condition favorable for sports. The Judges field, after being used only for political reasons for decades was recently given the new look and conditions for hosting several sports and Guwahati Town Club has been taking care of it quite well so far. Even it had denied All Assam Student’s Union from organizing cultural function during the Bihu days, in the sports ground.

It’s really sad to see that Akhil Gogoi, whom now entire Assam looks up to as a hope for the state, is trying to make the controversy of the Judges field political by using the name of Anna Hazare. For the rally, there are several grounds in the city where even a bigger gathering could be hosted, but Akhil is adamant in using the Judges Field since it gives him a chance to put up blame against Himanta Biswa Sharma and the Congress (I) Government whom he had long been fighting against.

What is even sadder and really shameful is that the people of Guwahati, as well as all section of media, are in support of Akhil Gogoi to hold Anna Hazare’s meeting in the Judges Field. In fact, when Munin Nabish of Guwahati Town club lost his temper in a press meet asking what Anna Hazare has done for Assam or North East that they should allow the Judges Field to be destroyed, the media only made fun of him. Next day he too started a hunger strike, protesting Anna Hazare’s meeting at Judges field and asking that it be held somewhere else, only to be made fun of him by the Media further. Akhil Gogoi, the new savior of Assam too is silent.

The question to Akhil Gogoi is why he is so adamant in having Anna Hazare in the Judge Field. It is indeed true that Anna Hazare has done nothing for Assam and has probably never even heard about the problems of the North Eastern Region. While we can not take credit away from his strong stand against Corruption, Akhil Gogoi must understand that just because he has been showered with love and blessings by the people of Assam does not mean he is above everything else. Just as no farmer would like if his cultivable land is converted to a sports complex overnight, no sportsmen would like to see a sports ground being destroyed due to a rally. And as a leader of farmer’s association, Akhil Gogoi is yet unable to understand this.

Where was Akhil Gogoi when Irom Sharmila was fasting for the last ten years? He never supported her or took any step to save the rural people, whom he claims to represent and who suffers most from the brutal AFSPA. Now he is keen in fighting for the sudden nationally acclaimed figure, Anna Hazare’s meeting but he has never dared to show any support for Irom Sharmila in her fight against the Indian State system. Akhil Gogoi, would you or your hero Anna Hazare dare to fast with for Irom Sharmila? We are sure you won’t because fighting against corrupted people, though essential, is easier than fighting against the Indian Army and the Indian Government. More than corruption, you now fight for a playground for your ego while Irom Sharmila continues to battle more pain and hard times to safeguard human life.

  1. Really appreciate it. I wish there are more people like you in the mainstream media and put it into the head of the mainland indians.

  2. Anna Himself Belongs to this Tainted Army, what he will protest its atrocities??

  3. This country needs somebody to follow, and Anna is as good as anybody else. Facebook is filled with inane Anna messages, trying to instil a forced sense of patriotism. Most of the youngsters, whether on facebook or in Azad Maidan, have no idea what the Lokpal Bill is all about, who Shanti Bhushan is, etc. This is all just distraction from bigger issues that we need to deal with as a country, like the China threat, for example, that nobody wants to talk about.

On the other hand, since most people from the rest of the country do not even know where Manipur is, they will not be bothered to make that a cause. In an effort to be incorporated into mainland politics (because that is where the power is), NE politicians will scream in support of Anna, but ignore the woman who has lived with a food pipe up her nose all these years.

When I mention Irom Sharmila to the ignorant, the response is inevitably along these lines – “Yes, very brave, but how does it affect the rest of the country? She is fighting only for the NE.” My initial resentment to the indifference of the rest of the country has now receded. I no longer speak of the NE with the intention to spread knowledge about the region.

I have seen the Army in Assam in the early 90s, and I know what they are capable of. The rest of the country will look at the Armed Forces in a different light, because that is what they have been brought up to believe. And since everybody is TOLD what to do and think nowadays, what with hundreds of news channels passing judgement, etc, I guess we have to live with the fact that individual intelligence is dead.

In the meantime, I think Anna is a brave man. He has dared to raise his voice. I just wish people were willing to jump into prisons for Irom Sharmila – especially the NE people who have so many opinions on Anna and the world.

    Thank you for the article.

  4. Priyankan Goswami- Congratulations for writing this piece which touches the core of the reality and questions the Hypocrisy on the side of Mainstream Indian Media people(e.g Arnab Goswami) and the Indian Middle Classes.

Irom is the real fighter and there cant be any comparison to be made between Anna and Irom.

Anna is a person whose main mission is to to make India completely a ‘Hindu’ Land where non vegetarians cant exist.

  5. there is no denying that the response of the indian govt has been hypocritical. having said that, it must also be said that it cuts both ways. irom didi’s supporters did nothing to launch a mass movement. so you must give credit to anna’s team. whenever irom didi’s supporters point out to this hypocrisy, they seem to invoke anna out of jealousy and conveniently forget that they themselves did not go out seeking support for her. they just expected the support to reach her.
we must acknowledge that unfortunately irom didi’s issue does not resonate with the rest of india. understandably that is the reason for differetial response of the govt as well as the public. also, anna has a history of leading local resistance movements which gives him the credibility in the larger public eye which unfortunately is not the case with irom didi. additionally there is nothing that stops all of irom didi’s supporters to launch a dedicated effort to publicise her cause. anna was a clever enough to build a team of dedicated and recognised people like kiran bedi, arvind kejriwal, shanti and prashant bhushan. this sorely lacks in the case of irom didi which despite all the validity of her fast has not helped the cause. anna reinvented gandhi for himself by harnessing modern tech like facebook twitter blackberry etc to his movement’s advantage. irom didi did not do that. sadly but truly thats where the difference is. anna’s is a carefully and meticulously planned political movement while irom didi’s fast comes froms a pure passion for her people but thats where it stops. at passion. it does not go beyond that.

  6. Hats off to Irom Sharmila and at the same time it is really painful to see the dirty politics started by dear to every Assamese’s heart Akhil Gogoi.

  7. wow! it’s great for me to read such painful unbearable words from you for my sinking state. yes it is the time to ask your question to this Anna. I support you your bravery word

  8. Finally got to read gud artical about sharmila after long time this article shud be publish all over india so tat every single person shud aware wats going on in north eastern part of india…gud work priyanka really apreciate

  9. why is india government very rude to northeastern states….did india government really take northeastern as india?????

  10. they will never fast for her cause there is no recognition it this… these people are limelight hoggers

  11. First of all i feel that this kind of opposition should come when every year the same judges field is used for bihu functions. secondly with all due respect to irom sharmila unfortunately her stand is only local in character. the government was and is forced to acknowledge anna’s fast because there is widespread support all over the country. i do agree that anna and akhil gogoi should voice their opinions about Irom Sharmila and her stand.

  12. Hit the bull’s eye..this is so straight and daring..i really appreciate you..i dont want anna to fast with Sharmila..he is too old to fast even for a year.anna is a celebrity created by the media in just 3 days.

  13. The contention made here per se is not very contributing to any kind of encouragement neither to the leaders who are leading anti corruption movement nor the readers. It is blunder to a person is better than the other or the intensity of fighting is put to be rated like commercial products. Whether it is Irom or Anna both are fighting against corruption and that matters. At least they are doing their bit of works. One may idolized any one of them but choice made shouldn’t be by force. As an individual everybody must have their own personal liberty to select their own hero according to their choice which is always better than being adamant to make your point heard and agreed upon.

  14. really appreciable….i hope this come as headline news in national newspaper.they dont hv the guts to do such protest…thy need only a brand name ..dats it..thy themselve are corrupt.

  15. It has been 11 years i read news about Irom Sharmila, in Nawa Yuwa, a monthly magazine for youth published from Nepal.I was astonished reading the article about her, her courage against the oppression ,brutality of the indian soldiers (pigs) against the people. I dont think Hazaree dares to stand with her coz her struggle is against the main strenth of the state , against the guns , directly against the guns, if she was given importance and publicity as hazaree , there was fear that the peoples revolution against (those democrats) opressors would gain much fuel and their heaven of loot could shake very soon, hazaree is against corruption , if his struggle gets victory then also , it wont do any good to the suppressed due to the unjust of the state

  16. i WILL BE MORE THAN OBLIGED TO BE OF ANY HELP,IF POSSIBLE.
i HAVE POSTED THE MESSAGE TO LOT MANY PEOPLE..,AND i FEEL THIS CAN BE THE INSTANT PROTEST WHICH i CAN MAKE..
    PLEASE DO KEEP UPDATED.
    THANKS,
    rohin.

  17. “It is indeed true that Anna Hazare has done nothing for Assam and has probably never even heard about the problems of the North Eastern Region.” exactly right and he may not know where is Assam, Manipur and other NE states in India???
Eighty percent of them do not Know Assam is in India, Manipur is in India…..

  18. I really appreciate what you said. Justice must be met out to Irom Sharmila ! She deserves it more than anyone else.

  19. Sharmila’s interests do not coincide with any of the corporates, Governments, rich, power-hungry or even the media. That is why she is not even heard of in most parts of India. Most of the people do not even know who she is, what a pity. People of the mainland, please understand that India does not end at Bengal. There are Indians to the East of Bengal, and they deserve as much freedom as we do. I have never visited the North East, though I have always wanted to, but I share your feelings. My brothers and sisters of the North East, you deserve much more as Indians.

  20. I do agree that the rest of India is more or less ignorant of the problems of North Eastern people. One main reason behind this is the complete absence of representation of this part of the country in mainstream media. I’m too made aware of this for the first time and I stronly condemn any such draconian rule and hypocrisy on the part of government but I don’t understand why the readers and the author for that matter are disparaging what Anna is doing for the country.
The cause that he has taken up concerns the whole country including the north eastern states(unless they are absolutely corruption free). If corruption exists in Assam then the question ‘What has he done for Assam?’ is absurd.
So it is my humble request that while Irom did’s cause should be stronly supported and fought for, Anna Hazare’s integrity should not be questioned.
    Peace.

  21. Dear Mr. Akhil Gogoi i have two simple questions for you which i believe you will answer in no uncertail terms:

    1. As RTI is used to get information and unfold various issues questioning policies and programmes including scams in govt. departments and through which you have come to the limelight, now the question an ordinary citizen like me wanted to know about the source of funding, expenditure and balance sheets as well as other policy details and links of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samity, for this, which Act shall i use to get these informations and more ?

Second, Will you now sit in fast-unto-death against withdrawal of Army Rule and the draconian laws prevailing in Assam and the other Northeastern States which is infact the reposte of corruption and irregularities. Among the many facets of corruption, this is one of the greatest malice affecting every section of our state and the region.

Hope you give some constructive reply without thinking about the arclights …

  22. Why she decided to Fast :

On November 2, 2000, in Malom, a town in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, ten civilians were allegedly shot and killed by the Assam Rifles, one of the Indian Paramilitary forces operating in the state, while waiting at a bus stop. The incident later came to be known to activists as the “Malom Massacre”. The next day’s local newspapers published graphic pictures of the dead bodies, including one of a 62-year old woman, Leisangbam Ibetomi, and 18-year old Sinam Chandramani, a 1988 National Child Bravery Award winner.
Sharmila, the 28-year-old daughter of a Grade IV veterinary worker, began to fast in protest of the killings, taking neither food nor water. As her brother Irom Singhajit Singh recalled, “The killings took place on 2 November, 2000. It was a Thursday. Sharmila used to fast on Thursdays since she was a child. That day she was fasting too. She has just continued with her fast”.Her primary demand to the Indian government was the repeal of the AFSPA, which allowed soldiers to indefinitely detain any citizen on suspicion of being a rebel. The act has been blamed by opposition and human rights groups for permitting torture, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial executions.

  23. Supporting the brave efforts of Sharmila……

Unite behined Sharmila for the justice and her sincere efforts against the brutalities of Indian army and rulers of such antihuman leaders
