The much awaited and debated talks between India and Pakistan finally started off in New Delhi with both countries talking to build confidence.
In relation to the context, India’s foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and her Pakistani counterpart Salman Bashir discussed several burning issues, including Jammu & Kashmir and terrorism.
It has been stated that the different confidence building measures (CBM) will be disclosed after their further talks today, Wednesday 27 July.
The delegation- level talks held last month in Islamabad had reviewed the progress in bilateral relations between the two nations and suggested changes of the confidence building measures to expand travel and trade across the divided regions of Kashmir, as per sources. Salman Bashir from Pakistan stated that they were meeting as preparatory discussion to the talks that will be held tomorrow between External Affairs Minister SM Krishna and Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar.
Nirupama Rao on the other hand claimed that they had a very good meeting in Islamabad last month and this in a sense has set the trend for the discussions today.
The CMBs to be announced today by Krishna & Khar is expected to increase the number of trading days across the Line of Control from 2 to 4, opening of more trading points and increase in the frequency of cross-Kashmir bus links between Srinagar & Muzaffarabad and Rawalakot and Poonch. There are also discussions to liberalize the visa system.
