Journalist Anil Majumdar was Killed By Former DGP of Assam | ULFA : The Mirage of Dawn

In a shocking revelation, senior journalist Rajeev Bhattacharyya’s latest book ‘ULFA : The Mirage of Dawn‘s page no 280 reads that “A former Director General of Assam police hired a surrendered ULFA (SULFA) activist to assassinate editor Anil Mazumdar in Guwahati on 24 March 2009.”
The same also added “After two weeks, the police chief hired another SULFA activist hailing from Nagaon to kill the assassin to eliminate all evidence. The police chief has formed a group of loyal SULFA activists to engage in business in the Mumbai dockyard and also to garner government contracts and grab land in Assam. The CID was unable to make any headway in Anil Mazumdar’s case which prompted Gauhati High Court to hand over the case to the CBI following a petition by the victim’s wife. The CBI identified a SULFA activist Bijoy Phukan as the murderer of Mazumdar.”
It should be elaborated that the then Chief Editor of Assamese daily AJI was gunned down on the eve of 24 March 2009 in front of his house while he was returning from office. Majumdar was seated in the back seat of his car while his driver went to open the gate of his house when a gunman shot Majumdar with two pistols in both hands. Critically wounded Majumdar was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to injury before reaching hospital.
Though the CBI(Central Bureau of Investigation) named SULFA leader Bijoy Phukan alias Lengra(handicapped by leg), resident of Nagaon, later found dead in Mukalmuwa of Nalbari district. Anil Majumdar’s wife alleged that Assam Police chief level was involved in Majumdar’s killing. The CID (Criminal Investigation Department) and CBi found involvement of SULFA leaders in Majumdar’s killing, they failed to connect the killing with Assam Police higher officials.
Bhattacharyya’s book also elevated that the special ULFA (United Liberation Front of Asom) leaders and cadres were getting advanced guerrilla training by the ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) in Afghanistan and in Pakistan. The book also narrated Paresh Baruah’s network across the globe including the LTTE(Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) and several other outfits.

Published by Harper Collins, ULFA : The Mirage of Dawn was launched on 10 February 2023 at Press Club of India in New Delhi. Former Ambassador to Myanmar Rajiv Bhatia and Major General (Retd.) Dipankar Banerjee was also a consultant to the UN(United Nations).
