The assaults on media persons in Assam have reached an alarming rate and the authority has shown unbelievable reluctances in nabbing the culprits, this is how the Electronic Media Forum Assam (EMFA) has expressed its concern on the increasing number of incidences relating to attacks on journalists on duty in the recent past.
In the last incident, a SEBA official attacked the television journalists on duty when they visited the office of State education board in the city on Saturday to report about the anomalies took place in HSLC Examinations.
“It was very much disturbing to see a visual, telecast by many Guwahati based news channels, where the SEBA administrative officer Kaushik Chandra Deka was exposed in trying to slap a TV reporter. A written complaint was lodged to the SEBA chairman Shantikam Hazarika who had promised appropriate actions against Mr Deka,” stated in a release issued by EMFA.
In a separate incident, a group of businessmen at Ulubari threatened to physically assault a reporter of News Times Assam, when he went there for reporting purposes.
Earlier the coal mafia in Sivsagar attacked Bipin Hazarika of DY365 on March 20 for his initiative to report about the illegal open cast coal mining in eastern Assam. An FIR was also lodged in the nearby police station.
The television journalist forum also appeals to the civil society group and general populace to support the media persons to perform their duties without interferences.
