The Iron Lady from Manipur, human rights activist Irom Sharmila Chanu has expressed utter shock and clarified that she had never called Anna Hazare‘s movement as “artificial”. This was clarified through a written statement from Sharmila to Just Peace Foundation (JPF), a Manipur based body promoting the Iron Lady’s decade long campaign.
Almost all major national media sources and TV channels had yesterday alleged that Irom Sharmila had described that Anna Hazare’s movement as “artificial” and that Irom had drawn comparison between her movement from Anna’s anti-corruption movement.
Irom Sharmila clarified that she admire Anna’s movement and stand and that she had described only the acts of the leaders, who were corrupt legislators and corporates as artificial. She also expressed he dissatisfaction over the media bias and stated that she would be unwilling to give further interviews to media if the only result is misunderstandings created by the media.
It is to be mentioned that one of the key members of Team Anna and general secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), Akhil Gogoi has recently stated that Anna Hazare would soon be visiting North East and that he would visiting Manipur to meet Irom Sharmila. Anna, as stated by Akhil Gogoi, is concerned about Irom Sharmila who has been fasting for more than a decade to repel the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
The Iron lady has been largely ignored by the national media throughout the decade in spite of her noble efforts for safeguarding human rights. She is now given sudden footage by the national media mostly following the huge uproar in North East against the clear discrimination showed between the Anna Hazare movement and Irom’s long movement. However such misreporting and allegations, if created by the media, might only act as a hindrance to the efforts of Irom Sharmila instead of helping her.
