At one side the news of the Guwahati teenager girl molestation issue by some savages has made ripples across the world, media as well as Government led by Chief Minister is on their toes to handle the situation and punish the culprits. Talk shows are organised by almost National Level news Channels, Politicians, Bollywood actors and everyone on the street are found condemning and claiming how much they have been disturbed. Woman’s Commission have taken steps and share & like campaigns started run in Facebook making mockery of Guwahati and its people.

In another issue where a college going village girl was molested in Assam during the same period in the hands of Army Jawans, it has not found any takers in the media. Leave alone talk shows in news channels, even the Government is giving a blind eye and deaf ears.

As per reports, the incident took place on 13th of July when a 13-member Indian Army team of Nitaipukhuri based camp in Sivasagar district was on patrolling in the flood-affected Dolpa area at around 5 pm. The girl was collecting firewood along with her parents when army personnel, one Anil Kumar Upadhaya, tried to molest her and assaulted the father of the girl when he tried to save his daughter. Some other women working in the vicinity saw the Army Jawan trying to manhandle the girl and raised a hue and cry. Immediately, local villagers came out and blocked the Vehicle and caught the personnel accused and later handed over to local police station.

The police on Sunday produced the Army Jawan before a local court in the district but was later released for unknown reasons. Yesterday, instead of taking action for punishing the culprits and violating all rights for women and basic human rights, the molested girl was taken to the Army Camp at Sibasagar Rangpur Chariali for further questioning and was kept inside for hours. Getting this news, local citizens, student bodies and other organisations started to protest outside the Army Camp to release the girl; however she was taken to another location instead and finally owing to several long hours of strong protest by locals, the girl was released at about 8:30pm evening. As such a District Bandh was observed in Sivasagar to protest this incident and action of Army as well as local administration.

Several organizations in the district like AASU, AJYCP, Brihattar Asomiya Yuba Mancha, All Tai Ahom Students’ Union, Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti, PCPD and Takam Mishing Porin Kaubang (TMPK) has strongly condemned the crime against women by the army man and demanded that the culprit be punished at the earliest. Even militant outfit ULFA led by Paresh Baruah group has questioned as to why Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was taking double standards and accused that the current Government was not taking any action to prevent any crime against woman in the state.

It is indeed strange to observe that the Guwahati incident had taken the prime time slot in all National News channels but none of the same channels are even mentioning yet about the molesting of the girl in the hands of the Army Jawan. Citizens are now rightly questioning about the double standards of the media. “Is this bias of media because there was no spicy video content of the Sivasagar victim to air as a news or because the other girl was from some corner of a village who does not enjoy the same rights”- questioned several Netizens from Assam, in Facebook and Twitter.
