National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) officials would be meeting the Group of Ministers (GoM) this morning at the Assam Secretariat to hold a crucial round of talks regarding the construction of the 2,000-MW Lower Subansiri Hydro-Electric Project at Gerukamukh.
The Group of Ministers (GoM) has had meetings with the groups and organisations protesting against the construction of the Mega Dam Project such as Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), etc and also several experts and the civil society on this issue. These meetings considered as the Government’s attempt to solve the deadlock over the construction of the Lower Subansiri Hydro-Electric Project.
It is to be mentioned that The GoM was to submit its final report to the Chief Minister by February 15; however due to the delay in holding talks with NHPC officials this too has been delayed. The report is now expected to be submitted after this crucial meet.
On the other hand, the much awaited talks scheduled between the National Hydro-Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) and eight organizations led by the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) on the issue of Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Project was abruptly cancelled last Monday which led to huge dissatisfaction and outcry from the protesting organisations.
Anti-dam protests in Assam has taken a popular shape already and its support base is seen to be increasing with every day.
