Acting on a tip off a team of sales tax officers seized an illegal tanker filled with 12000 liters of spurious petrol from near the Sotai area of Jorhat in the wee hours of Friday, December 19, 2013.
The driver of the tanker AS-01-J 2975, Amit Bahadur and helper Babloo Das resident of Sonitpur and Biswanath Chari-Ali have confessed to have brought the illegal petrol from Khatkhati in Bokajan and were en-route to a district of upper Assam. However they have reiterated to have taken up the job of driving and helper of the tanker only a week before and that the owner was one Sunil Kumar Jain of Guwahati who was guiding them the route and halting point by maintaining mobile contact with them after they started on their journey.
Talking to Times of Assam, Sales Tax Inspector informed,”We are concerned with the sales tax arising out of the total volume of the petrol and once we get the penalty in the form of sales tax, we would issue release order to the police who will now be the custodian of the tanker. This is a case of tax evasion and whether or not the police register a case of theft or something may be decided as per police laws”.
Taking the lead from the driver Amit Bahadur, Times of Assam correspondent tried to establish contact with Sunil Jain in his mobile number +9194350xx2x9 who in turned informed about being out of station in Kolkata presently. But very interestingly the driver was seen talking to Sunil earlier asking him to come fast as they were waiting for him in the petrol pump in Sotai.
Police and Sales Tax operation has once again exposed the dangerous and heavily profitable business being run by businessman and traders thus affecting the state economy in the name of evading tax and exploiting Assam’s natural resources. But question is whether by capturing one truck of illegal oil or coal would suffice the entire syndicate of this illegal trade.
