ULFA leader Rashmita Asom alias Jahnabi Mahanta Rajkonwar is no more. The Paresh Baruah-led hardliner faction of ULFA said this in an e-mail statement on Thursday. The ULFA has said that the ULFA leader died in a natural calamity on February 6. On the other hand, after getting the news, Jahnabi Mahanta Rajkonwar’s husband has urged the ULFA to hand over her body to the family.
Jahnabi Mahanta Rajkonwar started her journey to join the ULFA, leaving behind her entire family on February 12, 2012. After joining the ULFA, she took the alias Rashmita Asom. Even so, before completing one year of her rebellious journey, she breathed her last Wednesday in Myanmar. In an e-mail statement sent to Times of Assam on Thursday, Publicity Secretary of ULFA Arunudoy Asom alias Arunodoy Dohotiya said that the ULFA leader died following a natural calamity. Declaring her as a national martyr, Arunudoy Asom also said that three-day mourning is being observed to pay tribute to the courageous lady. After getting the news of her sad demise, the family of Jahnabi Mahanta is now heartbroken. Her husband has urged the ULFA to hand over her body to the family for the last rituals.
Mentionable that joining ULFA, Rashmita alias Jahnabi wrote a few poems and songs for the outfit including “Mohaxoi Aapuni Bhul Nokoribo”, “Xurjyodoir Ddhoni” which became a massive turn in the publicity of the outfit after decade gap activities led by late Uddipta Hazarika alias Rajen Sharma (Cotton College Alumni, 1982 batch) and Swadhinta Phukan alias Kabiranjan Saikia.
Jahnabi Mahanta who left her family to join the ULFA is no more. Jahnabi Mahanta Rajkonwar sacrificed her life for ULFA. Recalling the days they spent together, her husband said that he still feels nostalgic.
Even though the ULFA has claimed that she died in a natural calamity, intelligence agencies have to say that she died of diabetes in the ULFA headquarters in the Taga area of Myanmar. However, the family has now requested the ULFA to hand over her body to the family. It is still unclear whether the organization will hand over the body or not.
