Chief Minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi who would be accompanying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his visit to Bangladesh in just over a week from now is keen on reopening of the Assam – Bangladesh transit routes.

Speaking to journalists, Gogoi stated that he believes that this step would improve the economy of the state and was all in support for opening the old roadways, railways as well as waterways between Assam and Bangladesh for fostering trade and commerce.

The port at Chittagong, which would be allowed to India for its use, is expected to take trade and commerce to a new dimension.

In addition to opening of transit routes, border disputes and completion of the border fence at Indo-Bengal border, which is now long outstanding is expected to be the prime discussion.

Mentionable that Indian and Bangladesh have progressed quite well in developing better mutual relations in the recent period. This development is being compared with the opening of the Berlin Wall.
