Boat Tragedy haunts Assam again – 20 missing

Boat tragedies in Assam seems not to go away but haunt more and more. This evening, in another such tragic incident, 20 people are missing after a country boat capsized in Bongaigaon district.

The boat, eye witnesses claimed, had about 40 people on board although the police put the figure at as around 25. Most of them are known to be traders travelling upstream of river Brahmaputra from Chapar in Dhubri district further west. The accident happened soon after the boat sailed into Champa, a tributary of the Brahmaputra at about 6 pm.

The cause of the mishap could not be ascertained yet as per Police. So far 15 people have been rescued by locals and rescue workers, but no information on the missing found yet.

It is to be mentioned that this is the second boat mishap in just over a month in western Assam. Last month, 45 people died when a ferry carrying more than 200 people capsized near Medartari in Dhubri district.
