A couple of days before, TV channel ‘News18 Assam’ and an Assamese local newspaper ‘Dainik Janambhumi’ published a piece of news, citing Rebati Phukan is the same person who appointed as current and permanent General Secretary of ULFA(I). Citing about Rebati Phukan’s past as a football player and childhood friend of ULFA(I) supremo Paresh Baruah.
The report in ‘News18 Assam’ and the newspaper said that as per the outfit’s norms, Rebati Phukan has taken an organizational name as Jyotisman Asom alias RP alias Agni. Mr. Phukan alias Jyotisman Asom is appointed as the permanent General Secretary of ULFA(I).
Rebati Phukan, childhood friend of ULFA(I)’s Chief of the Staff Paresh Baruah, who was missing since last April 22, is still a mystery for people of Assam and Indian intelligence agencies.
Meanwhile, in a recent press release issued by ULFA(I), the outfit refuted such a claim made by the two media.
The outfit, in the press release, said that the news circulated in the newspaper is totally bias and the outfit has not appointed anyone as it’s permanent General Secretary. The outfit also reiterated that Rebati Phukan is kidnapped by Indian intelligence sponsored agents and demanded his release.
It is to be mentioned that Rebati Phukan’s son Kaushik Phukan filed a petition at the Supreme Court of India seeking the production of his father.
Later in August, Kaushik has withdrawn the petition as the bench of Justice A.M. Sapre and Justice U.U. Lalit passed the directive to transfer the case to Gauhati or Meghalaya High Courts.
