In a significant move towards peace in insurgency ravaged India’s Northeastern state of Assam, as many as nine Insurgent groups of the state will lay down arms in Guwahati on January 24, two days before Republic Day celebrations.
This was declared post a high level meeting held yesterday between the Chief Minister of state, Tarun Gogoi and Assam Police Special Branch ADGP Khagen Sarma. The nine rebel groups to lay down arms on January 24 would be The All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA), Adivasi Cobra Militant of Assam, Birsa Commando Force, Santhal Tigers’ Forum, Adivasi People’s Army, KLA, UKDA, KRA and Hmar People’s Convention.
With a high number of Insurgent groups coming for negotiations with the Government, it is in one way considered a welcome move. At the same time, meeting the demands of these groups separately would be another issue the Government is expected to face, if talks with these groups are done collectively but separately.
