Dhruba Jyoti Deka – Editor of Times of Assam – who was reported to be arrested on August 12, 2011, has already been released on bail on September 20, 2011, by the Gauhati High Court. Although the case under which he was reported to be arrested (alleged Facebook account case of Atanu Bhuyan, Editor-in-Chief of NewsLive) is still underway – there has been some interesting development as known.
From police source itself, it has been known that Dhruba Jyoti Deka was arrested not on August 12th as claimed by the authorities – but on August 5th itself.
He was arrested on 5th August not by the police but by Army intelligence suspecting to be ULFA Publicity Commander Arunodoy Dohotiya and not on charges of the Facebook account case. The Intelligence had strong doubt that hardliner ULFA leader Arunodoy Dohotiya is none else but Dhruba Jyoti Deka – which was also informed to intelligence by a ULFA (Pro-Talk) faction’s Political leader. However, the army intelligence handed over Dhruba Jyoti Deka on the same day evening to Chandmari Police station, Guwahati where he was kept under custody for further interrogation and investigation.
Dhruba Jyoti Deka is a close relative of the senior most ULFA (Pro-Talk) leader of their Army Wing and Deka was questioned on any probable linkage with the hardliner Paresh Baruah faction. It is also known from the advocate who tried to file habeas-corpus, that Dhruba Jyoti Deka was interrogated by two high profile Encounter Specialists, who were also seen outside Mr. Deka’s office on 4th August evening after he had left for the day.
In addition, it has been learnt that the Special Task Force had often logged in from Dhruba Jyoti Deka’s Facebook account and chatted online with this friends, during the time he was in custody (from August 5th onward). The police also chatted with other members of Times of Assam through his account – which no one realized that it was not their editor but someone else. Most of those who chatted just considered the unusual way of chatting and a few strange questions asked from Dhruba Jyoti Deka’s profile as a mere joke and nothing else.
Finally, Dhruba Jyoti Deka was arrested on 11th August and the declaration was made strangely on 12th August by the police and was accused to be the owner of the Fake Atanu Bhuyan profile.
Times of Assam – birthed just about a year ago – have already made a huge reader base and global recognition, surpassing several other media sources from the region. This has been possible only because of the uncompromising fearless nature of reporting and articles published here. We fear that the charges on our editor – Dhruba Jyoti Deka might just turn out to be an attempt to sabotage the voice of media – as happened many times in the past with various other un-compromising editors of media & newspapers including stalwarts like Late Parag Kumar Das, Ajit Bhuyan etc.
Post an executive meeting – the Times of Assam team has requested Dhruba Jyoti Deka to resume his responsibility as the editor of this news portal.
