Late Bhupen Hazarika gets second Highest Civilian Honour

Late Bhupen Hazarika, the Bard of Brahmaputra has been chosen posthumously for Padma Vibhushan Award, the second highest civilian honour of the country, along with four others.

Apart from late Bhupen Hazarika, former civil servant and Governor TV Rajeswar, late cartoonist Mario De Miranda, 88-year-old eminent painter, KG Subramanian and orthopedic Kantilal H Sancheti were selected for the Padma Vibushan awards.

A total of 109 people, including 19 women, were selected for the Padma awards on the eve of the Republic Day. The awards comprise five Padma Vibhushan, 27 Padma Bhushan and 77 Padma Shri awards. President Pratibha Patil approved the awards.

From North East India, two people have been selected in the Padma Shri awards category. Sunil Janah of Assam has been nominated for the Padma Shri in the category of Art and Photography. Dr Ralte L Thanmawia of Mizoram has been nominated for the Padma Shri in the category of literature and education.
