The most speculated dissent in Assam Congress MLAs came to a new but expected twist today with Himanta Biswa Sarma, once known as the right hand of the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, putting down his resignation to the Governor of the state. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who resigned as the Health and Education Minister tweeted that he had decided not to compromise with his conscience anymore and later at a press conference, he denied that he had ambitions to become the Chief Minister himself.
It may be noted by putting down his resignation to the Governor, he actually stands to resign as a MLA also as per protocols and not just as Minister only. He has also claimed to have support of 40 other MLAs out of Gogoi’s 78 MLAs who has formed the Government.
It is being speculated widely that Himanta may join BJP and leave Congress. However, if he does so he may not have the trust of loyalty. He has been accused of betraying several bodies and organizations such as the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and even the militant organization ULFA. In fact in December 2013, the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) had claimed that Assam Health and Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was once an over ground member of the outfit’s political wing and had quit the outfit due of his inadequate knowledge. Further, he was known to be loyalist of CM Tarun Gogoi before standing against the CM himself for self-reasons, as alleged. There were numerous other reasons which stand against Himanta as noted in this article, published before last Assam assembly elections.
The Assam unit of the BJP had demanded Himanta’s resignation several times in the past alleging him for corruption, Manabendra Sharma murder case, ties with ULFA etc. It would be interesting to observe BJP’s attitude if Himanta enters BJP. On the other hand, there are also now whispers that Akhil Gogoi was being covertly used by Himanta for the last two years in drumming up dissent against Tarun Gogoi. Truth – as always in politics – is just a mirage at the moment.
